![]() A new Celtic Cross for Holyhead
Commissioned by Anglesey Council as part of a Holyhead regeneration plan, the new work will stand in the centre of Market Square near to the entrance to St Cyby's Church. Incorperating an existing smaller Cross, the central work consisting of the cross and base will be 4 metres high and carved in Moelfre Stone - a blue/grey limestone from Anglesey. The surrounding seats, designed by Hamish specifically for the site, are being manufactured in Ballymagrehan Granite at McConnells Quarry, Kilkeel, Northern Ireland.
The commission, managed by Public Art Wales and due for completion in July 2008 was awarded to Hamish following a nation-wide competition. His first proposal was for a contemporary sculpture on the same site, but following extensive consultation with the local community, the Celtic Cross and seating was chosen in its place.
