THE SHILA SHILP PROJECT

Hamish began working with The Craft Council of India in February 2004 following an invitation from the the British Council. He was asked to co-ordinate a series of training workshops for traditional Indian stone artisans.

The aim of these workshops is to introduce the artisans to new technology and equipment, teach them how to work with designers and architects and to assist in product development and marketing. Training also focuses on increasing the efficiency and safety of their work places.

Now known as the Shila Shilp Project, training workshops have been held in Chennai, Agra, Bangalore, Pondicherry, Jaipur, Bhubaneshwar and Puri.

An ongoing programme run by the Craft Council of India, aimed at promoting and selling the new products developed during this process, has also been established. An exhibition of these works won a top award at the 2006 STONA International Stone Show in Bangalore.
