THE SHILA SHILP PROJECT
![]() Following an invitation from the British Council in February 2004, Hamish Horsley began working with The Craft Council of India developing and co-ordinating a series of study programmes and workshops for traditional Indian stone artisans.
Called the Shila Shilp Project, its purpose is to introduce the artisans to new technology and equipment, teach them how to work with designers and architects and to assist in product development and marketing. Training also focuses on increasing the efficiency and safety of their work places. It won a top award at the 2006 STONA International Stone Show in Bangalore.
Hamish has now directed training workshops in Chennai, Agra, Bangalore, Pondicherry, Jaipur, Bhubaneshwar and Puri, with an ongoing programme aimed at promoting and selling the new products developed during this process.
In a collaborative venture with Vijaya Rajasekaran, an acclaimed traditional stone sculptor and Shila Shilp colleague, Hamish is now setting up a new studio/workshop outside Bangalore where these products and his sculptures, can be produced.
