Sculptor Dame Elisabeth Frink has officially opened a £20,000 waterfall sculpture in the central courtyard of the West Dorset Hospital in Dorchester.

She threw a switch to send 90 gallons of water a minute cascading down the sculpture and into ponds of goldfish and water plants.

New Zealand artist Hamish Horsley, a prize winning graduate from the Royal College of Art, created the feature from 20 tons of Portland stone and more than 200 wheelbarrows of concrete. Doctors believe it will help create a peaceful environment and help patients recover more quickly.

The sculpture is the first major work of art commissioned by Arts in Hospital, a voluntary project set up by the West Dorset Health Authority for the new Hospital. Dame Elisabeth is a founder member of the scheme.
